Geographic and historic touch

Les Houches is a resort village in the Chamonix valley of the French Alps.
Established in 1951, the Physics Center is located in a group of chalets surrounded by meadows and woods at 1150 m elevation.
It is ideally situated for intellectual pursuits and mountaineering.

Meals

Meals are taken at the school dining room. Drinks are not included. Accompanying persons who have registered can take their meals at the restaurant (50 FF per meal).
Breakfast : 8:00 to 8:45 AM.
Lunch : 12:30 AM.
Dinner : 7:30 PM.

Useful luggage

A flashlight is handy at night ; the school chalets are scattered on the mountainside.

Clothes

Weather is unpredictable (altitude 1150 m), temperature may range from -150C to 50C in winter up to 300C in summer. Sport clothes preferable. Warm sweater, rain gear, good walking shoes and home shoes necessary.

Leisures

The school has a physics library with mostly reference books and a few scientific journals. You can bring CD for the evenings in the cafeteria of the school.

Miscellaneous

The school has projectors for standard slides and for transparencies and also a video-tape recorder VHS multi-system : NTSC, PAL, SECAM.
Also computer facilities : 1HP Unix workstation, X terminals, 1 Macintosh and 1 PC, a laser jet printer, it is possible to connect laptops to the local ethernet network.
A connection to Internet via ISND link.

Insurance : we draw your attention on the fact taht we only hold a collective insurance for accidents occuring on the School campus.

Participants

Participation will be limited to 65.

Conference Fee

The conference fee (400 euros or 2625 French Francs per participant) covers full board and lodging.
It will be paid at the Secretariat in Les Houches upon arrival.
Payment can be made by:

  • Cash in French Francs.
  • Personal cheques in French Francs.
  • Credit card : Visa and MasterCard. American Express is not accepted .
  • Traveller's Cheques in French Francs (not encouraged!)

    • Grants will be available, in particular for nationals from EU or Associated States under 35.

    Arrival and Departure

    Arrival date : Sunday, 17th
    Departure date : Saturday, 23rd
    A bus shuttle will be booked for the participants at these dates.
    Participants are expected to stay in Les Houches for the whole duration of the meeting.
    Exceptionally shorter stays may be accepted but priority will be given to those attending the whole meeting.
